Dr. Bharat Shah, a board-certified plastic surgeon at St. John’s Clinic shares the highlights discussed in the recently held meeting of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in San Diego. In the conference, plastic surgeons from around the country and the world, met to share technologies and experiences.
When asked about the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men, Shah answered that men are more open to procedures that offer natural results with minimal downtime. Some of these common procedures are Botox, mini-facelifts, laser skin resurfacing, hair replacement, and liposuction.
For women, Shah stressed that breast augmentation remains to be the top surgical procedure in the list. More so that women now have more options when it comes to their favorite cosmetic surgery. One of the fast rising trends right now is the “mommy makeover” which includes a tummy tuck, breast enhancement and liposuction to help new moms gain back their pre-pregnancy figure.
According to Dr. Shah, the number of teenagers seeking cosmetic surgery is increasing. The usual trend is that parents bring their teens for a consultation. At that time, the plastic surgeon will discuss the issues surrounding the problem and its surgical solution. Realistic expectations and the best time for the procedure are also discussed. Breast augmentation should only be administered to women 18 years old and above.
Dr. Shah also discussed a sensitive topic – labiaplasty – a procedure that aims to reduce the protrusion of the female genitalia. Shah revealed that labiaplasty is a common procedure in the West Coast though it is not commonly requested in his region.
Dr. Shah also talked about body contouring procedures and how a large number of patients are seeking shapely curves and legs, triggered by the trend of lean and healthy men and women seen on TV, and magazines.
